This study examines the relationship between regulations, moral legitimacy, and industry performance. Using U.S. state-level data from 1994 to 2010, it finds that regulations decrease performance and negatively affect moral legitimacy. However, moral legitimacy positively impacts industry performance when regulations align with moral values, revealing its mediating role.
