More than 20 years of continuous improvement in business education are being celebrated at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) with the recent confirmation of renewed accreditation for business education from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This accreditation relies upon a high quality of learning standards and continuous improvement. RSM was among the first European business schools to receive AACSB accreditation in 1998 and was told this week that it has received it for the fifth consecutive time; it lasts for the next five years.

The AACSB evaluates a business school’s mission, its research, educational programmes, faculty qualifications as well as engagement, innovation and impact. RSM is one of 831 business institutions in 54 countries and territories that has the accolade, which is one of the three elements in RSM’s ‘triple crown’ of accreditations. The other two are the EFMD Quality Improvement System and  AMBA,The Association of MBAs. The triple crown is an exclusive indicator of quality that highlights the school’s international reputation. Only 1 per cent of business schools worldwide – 90 schools – have it, meaning they are accredited by three international, independent accreditation committees, as well as regional and independent accreditation bodies.

International standing

Dean, Prof. Steef van de Velde said: “Successful accreditations make a big difference to the international standing and reputation of RSM, so I am very proud of this AACSB achievement. The reviewing panel was particularly impressed by our mission statement, to be a force for positive change in the world. This accreditation is a reflection of our positive, collaborative spirit and the quality and impact of our education and research.”

Founded in 1916, AACSB is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools, and the largest business education network connecting students, educators, and businesses worldwide.

For over a century, AACSB accreditation has been synonymous with the highest standards in business education and has been earned by only five per cent of the world's schools offering business degrees at the bachelor level or higher.

"AACSB congratulates each institution on their achievement," said Stephanie M. Bryant, executive vice-president and chief accreditation officer of AACSB. "Every AACSB-accredited school has demonstrated a focus on excellence in all areas, including teaching, research, curricula development, and student learning. The intense peer-review process exemplifies their commitment to quality business education."

Achieving accreditation is a process of rigorous internal focus. Schools focus on developing and implementing a plan to align with AACSB's accreditation standards. These standards require excellence in areas relating to strategic management and innovation; student, faculty, and staff as active participants; learning and teaching; and academic and professional engagement. Once accreditation is achieved, each institution participates in a five-year continuous improvement peer-review to maintain high quality and extend its accreditation.
