A second edition of a handbook embracing the latest developments in management consulting written by  Dr Marc Baaij, associate professor of strategic management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), has been published. An introduction to management consultancy takes into account how the ways of working have changed over the past decade and lends valuable insights into essential management knowhow, which Dr Baaij has learned from working with the world’s top management consulting firms. The book is useful for seasoned industry professionals as well as inexperienced newcomers.

A ‘how-to’ for management consulting

Dr Baaij wrote the first edition of An introduction to management consultancy in 2014. It was an immediate success, with its clearly laid out information about strategy, change, analytics, problem-solving, solution implementation and decision-making.

Since then, the market has changed with the introduction of new methods and practices – not least the massive global disruptions in the professional services industry from the end of 2019 until the start of 2022. With this in mind, Dr Baaij felt the time was right to create a more current edition of his book.

In a recent interview with online magazine Consultancy.eu, Dr Baaij said, “During my 20 years of research into the industry, I have worked with managers, partners, senior alumni and most of the world’s leading consultancy firms. Based on training thousands of people, and coaching hundreds of field projects, I have refined my approach to fit the needs of inexperienced consultants.”

A much needed update

The revised edition of the book offers a comprehensive and updated view of management consultancy, sharing insights into the newest best practices. It offers experienced and relatively new professional readers a step-by-step guide to solving problems in a structured way. The book also introduces contemporary methods like design thinking and agile process models, along with giving a detailed account of solution development and implementation.

An introduction to management consultancy, second edition has already received positive reviews from academics, teachers, students and industry professionals. It has proven to be a useful tool for teaching, onboarding and to have on hand as a reference tool. It is available for purchase at Sage Publishing and Amazon.nl.
