Dr Johannes Boegershausen, Associate Professor in the Department of Marketing Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) is “among the most promising early career researchers globally”, according to the Marketing Science Institute (MSI). That is why the institute has selected him for the 2025 cohort of the prestigious MSI Young Scholars Program. Of the 38 participants, Dr Boegershausen is one of only three scholars employed at a non-Northern American university.

From 31 May to 3 June, Dr Boegershausen will join the other early-career faculty in New York City for a four-day conference at Meta’s Hudson Yards campus. He said, “I am thrilled to be part of the MSI Young Scholar Class of 2025 and look forward to spending time with this group of amazing marketing scholars in June. As much of my recent research focuses on social media consumption, I am particularly excited that the event will be hosted at Meta’s NYC campus.”

Dr Boegershausen’s research examines marketplace morality, stigma, and well-being, often from a social-cognitive perspective. He explores how and why certain cues in the marketplace lead people to perceive others, such as employees or other consumers, differently and to engage in socially desirable and undesirable behaviours toward them. He also develops methodological frameworks and tools to enhance the quality of social science research using online research methods.

Excellence in marketing scholarship

The MSI Young Scholars Program was created to recognise excellence in marketing scholarship, build meaningful connections across disciplines, and strengthen relationships between leading academics and MSI’s member organisations. Launched in 2001, the programme now includes more than 400 alumni. Eligible candidates for the 2025 MSI Young Scholar Program are marketing faculty who have graduated from their PhD programme between 2017 and 2022.

Selection is based on:

  • substantive contributions of the candidate’s most important papers published within the past five years
  • demonstrated impact on the field of marketing
  • research productivity and quality in top business journals and relevant interdisciplinary outlets
  • relevance of research to the MSI member community.

Dr Boegershausen’s research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. At RSM, he teaches the third-year undergraduate minor The Art of Choosing: Making Choices that Maximize Happiness and the MSc elective Brand Development.
