In his inaugural address, Taco Reus will talk about the disciplinary background, central research questions and themes of Global Strategy, and he will discuss what may be the dominant framework of understanding how global strategy works and what determines its success. In a nutshell, the formation and implementation of global strategies involves intricate connections between – and savvy decision-making about – resources, relations and rules; that is, the R3 of Global Strategy. What comes into play particularly in the international context is the role of rules. One of the aims of this address is therefore to broaden the interest in the roles of rules. The talk discusses aspects of the international acquisition process to suggest that success in Global Strategy relies for an important part on a curiosity about how rules – both our own and others, both local and foreign – influence who we and others are as individuals and as organizations.
The inaugural address will take place on Friday, 5 December 2014. The ceremony will start promptly at 15.00 in the Aula of the Erasmus Building at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, Burgemeester Oudlaan 50 in Rotterdam. The reception will take place at 15.45 in the same building.
Professor Reus was appointed RSM’s Professor of Global Strategy in the academic chair created on 1 April 2013 and endowed by the Erasmus Trust Fund. The field of global strategy addresses the global aspects of the four central questions in strategic management: how do firms behave in a global context? Why do firms differ in a global context? What is the function of the head office in a globally diversified firm? And what determines success or failure in global competition?
Professor Reus’ research examines how firms are influenced by the global context in which they strategise, operate and expand, and how organisational capabilities and experience help or hurt firms in this environment. Taco Reus usually studies these topics in the context of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) and throughout the M&A process; from counterintuitive roles of prior experience and simplification rules in acquisition premium decisions, to the roles of cross-border knowledge transfer, cultural and institutional differences, procedural justice, and integration capabilities in the post-merger phase.
