Did you know that the percentage of English Wikipedia biographies about women stands at just 18.72% as at February 1st 2021. This is according to the WikiProject Women in Red – a project that addresses gender bias in Wikipedia content.

To empower the ECWO and EUR communities to help increase the visibility of women on Wikipedia , the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) and Erasmus Centre for Women and Organisations (ECWO) will hold an online Edit-A-Thon on March 31st 2021.

Two training sessions will be offered (13:00 & 18:00) on how to edit or create Wikipedia articles. In-between information sessions, the Zoom link will be open and we want you to drop in (13:45-17:45) to work with other editors, learn more, and discuss. You will emerge from this event as part of a volunteer community that is working to tell the stories of women across all areas of society on one of the world’s most popular websites.

ECWO’s co-Executive Director, Prof. Hanneke Takkenberg, will give a short talk at 18h00 on why increasing the visibility of women in science, business, culture, education, healthcare and so much more is vital to society’s progress. Dr Laura Braden, Assistant Professor at ESHCC’s Department of Arts & Culture Studies will oversee the two information sessions.

You will also be invited to submit your own suggestions for women who should have a Wikipedia page.

Already know about Wikipedia? Want to help with the event? We are also looking for volunteers to help (whether you know about Wikipedia or not)! Please email Laura Braden at Braden@eshcc.eur.nl if you are willing to volunteer.

So save the date to join our movement. Register here.
