With summer holidays only a few days away, students have hosted an awards ceremony to recognise the hard work of teachers in bachelor programmes at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) over the past year – the Professor Awards 2022. Thousands of students in Years 1 and 2 of the BSc International Business Administration and BSc Business Administration programmes at RSM have voted for their favourite professors in the awards organised by RSM’s Student Representation (SR). Student votes – and the accompanying comments – give an insight into the kind of teaching students have found inspiring over the past academic year, which started with online teaching before students were allowed to return to in-person classes. Four winning teachers were presented with their awards on 2 June in the celebratory event in the Pavilion on campus.

Memorable marketing lectures

Dr Christophe Lembregts, who teaches marketing management, was voted top teacher by Year 1 BScIBA students. They nominated him for his sense of humour and informative but fun lectures that gave examples of marketing concepts and case studies that students found particularly memorable – one of which was about beer. He was presented with his award by Tom Verlijsdonk.

Clear explanation of abstracts

Senior lecturer in financial management Dr Arjen Mulder was voted the favourite of Year 1 BSc IBA students for taking them through the challenging subject with clear explanations and careful preparation for their exams. “A true expert in his field, [he] knows how to make such a – for us – abstract course feel closer and show us the practical value of the material,” said one student. Dr Mulder was presented with his award by Shraddha Qaundinya.

‘He made me like finance’

Dr Florian Madertoner, who teaches corporate finance, once again won the award for favourite professor for Year 2 BScIBA and BScBA students. His track record is impressive: Dr Madertoner won the award five years consecutively from 2016 to 2020 – when he also won an award for adapting his course to online teaching. Students commented on his energy and patience in teaching, as well as his jokes. “He exceeded my expectations of what a teacher would ideally be like. He was different from other teaching styles, bringing confidence and motivation to every single student,” said one student. Another said: “He made me like finance,” – an opinion shared by several student voters. Dr Madertoner was presented with his awards by Robin Croes and Crina Spiratos.

Interactive and captivating

An ‘honourable mention’ award was presented to Dr Alexander Genevsky for his teaching of marketing management. His special research interest is developing models that more accurately describe and predict market-level behaviour in the real world. Students commented on his interactive and captivating style of teaching marketing management involving other areas of study into marketing.

Students also gave a vote of thanks to RSM’s student advisors and the programme management teams that make sure their academic programmes run smoothly.

The machinery of quality at RSM

The Student Representation event on 2 June also recognised the forthcoming retirement of Adri Meijdam, who has been Executive Director of bachelor programmes at RSM for almost 23 years. SR thanked him for his contribution to the SR supervisory board. Adri Meijdam spoke about the system of Student Representation at RSM, which give students a voice about the education they receive by gathering feedback for every course. “We take Student Representation reports seriously and they have multiple functions, for things that go well and things that could be improved. Student Representation has become a part in the machinery of quality at RSM,” he said.
