There are two types of higher education in the Netherlands: research-oriented (WO) and profession-oriented (HBO):
Research-oriented education (wetenschappelijk onderwijs, WO) is traditionally offered by research universities, such as Erasmus University which Rotterdam School of Management is a part of.
Higher professional education (hoger beroepsonderwijs, HBO) is offered by universities of applied sciences (hogescholen)
More information on the Dutch higher education system can be found on the Study in Holland website or you can check out this video made by Nuffic. Bachelor's degrees from both types of education lead to a level 6 qualification in the National Qualification Framework and are therefore equal in level.
How does RSM determine whether my study is considered to be comparable to that obtained at a Dutch research university?
When evaluating your academic background, it needs to be categorized in one of the two types of higher education offered in the Netherlands: research-oriented (WO) or profession-oriented (HBO).
Sometimes the comparison is very straight forward as the country has a similar binary education system such as Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. Applicants who have a degree from a University of Applied Sciences from one of these countries must first complete a pre-master year before they are eligible for admission to the master.
If you want to get an idea of the equivalent Dutch level of your diploma, you can check the list of common diplomas from your country on the Nuffic website. Nuffic is the central Dutch organization for the evaluation of foreign diplomas awarded in higher education.
For example for Diplomas obtained in India it is concluded that a 3 year bachelor of Commerce is comparable to an Applied Sciences Degree (HBO) in the Netherlands. This means that applicants from India with this diploma are not eligible for RSM master programmes.
India: Honours Bachelor of Commerce
The ECTS credit system was developed by the European Commission in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad as part of the Bologna Process.
Each program consists of a certain amount of EC’s that you will need to obtain in order to be able to graduate.

Once you decline your offer for a Numerus Fixus programme it is no longer possible to get it back. The refused place has immediately and automatically been offered to another student. Therefore, if you're not certain if you want to start your studies at RSM, we recommend that you accept your offer. You can always give your offer back if you decide to study elsewhere.
If you wish to proof your English proficiency by taking one of the standardized English tests, RSM accepts the following tests and minimum scores:
IELTS: Academic test minimum overall score of 7.0 and minimum sub scores of 6.5
TOEFL (iBT) & TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition: minimum overall score 95 with minimum sub scores of 22 for reading, listening, 23 for speaking and for writing 24.
Please note that the ITP TOEFL test is not accepted as it does not test the speaking abilities of the candidate. RSM does however temporarily accept the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China. Students who have taken this test, will be required to take a additional verbal test via the Erasmus University Language & Training Center.
Cambridge English test with a minimum overall level of C1 and subscores of 180 for all parts of the test (reading, writing, listening, speaking & use of English). Accepted forms of test are:
General guidelines:
GMAT test results can only be verified online. For this you need to give RSM permission to access your score.
For master applicants who will obtain their bachelor diploma from a research university outside the Netherlands, it is mandatory to show a sufficient GMAT test result before the application deadline or before the programme has reached maximum capacity (whichever occurs first).
Master applicants who will obtain their bachelor degree at a Dutch research University (WO) have to meet the GPA requirement of a 7.0 or higher (HBO 7.5). For this group of applicants the GMAT score can't be used to compensate for an insufficient GPA.
Research universities in the Netherlands (‘universiteiten’ in Dutch) are institutions of tertiary education with a focus on scientific research in an academic setting. These institutions essentially train students in academic study and the application of knowledge and often do not include (mandatory) work experience. However, many of the programmes do also have a professional component and most graduates actually find work outside the research community.
In order to be eligible for admission to an undergraduate programme at a Dutch research university, like the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, you will need to have at least a high school diploma comparable to a Dutch diploma on VWO-level. Check out RSM’s website for any other admission requirements per programme.
Another type of education in the Netherlands is taught by the universities of applied sciences (in Dutch ‘hogescholen’). These institutions offer programmes that focus on the practical application of arts and sciences. Getting practical work experience through internships is an important part of the professional study programmes. For admission into an undergraduate programme at a university of applied sciences, your high school diploma needs to be similar to a Dutch diploma on HAVO level. An example of a university of applied sciences is Hogeschool Rotterdam (Rotterdam University of Applied Science).
Both types of institutions award bachelor's degrees, all research universities and some universites of applied science offer master's degrees. Only research universities offer doctorate programmes. The level attained at both types of university is the same (National Qualification Framework Level 6), however students with a bachelor from a university of applied science generally need to complete a premaster if they would like to do a master at a research university. This is needed to bridge the gap in research and statistics.
The most important factor in the selection process are your grades. Grades earned in secondary school are the most significant predictors of study success at university. Your grades contribute to 75% of possible selection points, which are used to determine your rank. The factor “motivation” is difficult to measure and has little to no predictive value for study success.
The Dutch grading system scale ranges from 1 to 10:
8.5 - 10 | excellent |
7.5 - 8.4 | good |
6.5 - 7.4 | satisfactory |
5.5 - 6.4 | sufficient |
1.0 - 5.4 | fail |
Note: The grades 1-3 are hardly ever awarded and 9 and 10 are very rare.
Most courses at RSM are worth 3, 6 or 12 EC (European Credits). One credit point represents 25 to 30 hours of study. The workload includes time spent attending lectures or seminars, independent study time, and preparation for and completion of exams.
To complete a full-time programme, students must complete 60 credits per academic year (30 credits per semester).
Applicants with a bachelor degree obtained at an accredited University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands (HBO), Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland are required to follow a pre-master programme at RSM before entering the MSc programmes.
RSM also welcomes students to the premaster who have completed their bachelor at a research university, but are missing the required content in qualitative & quantitative research methods and statistics.
RSM's premaster programmes are open to students from any discipline. After submitting an application for a premaster programme, RSM will evaluate the application and indicate which Master programmes are possible to progress to after successful completion of the premaster.
Applicants with a non-business related bachelor are only admissable to the following Master programmes: Master in Management (full-time and part-time). Accounting & Financial Management, and Business Analytics & Management.
RSM does not use recommendation / reference letters as a part of the evaluation process. Reference letters are always positive and are therefore not of help in evaluating applicants. The evalution is alwasy based on the minimum requirements listed on our website.
No. There is no deposit that you pay when accepting the offer.
RSM would ideally like to hear your reply to our offer of admission within 2 weeks of receiving the results. You can accept the offer of admission first, and later on if you change your mind you can simply notify RSM by email that you want to decline or defer the offer of admission. There are no repercussions if you change your reply.
No, it is not possible to transfer your credits obtained at another university to one of RSM's Master programmes. All students must formally complete the entire programme at the Rotterdam School of Management.

As RSM's Master programmes are pre-experience programmes, students usually start with the MSc programmes after completion of their undergraduate studies. Therefore, most students are aged between 20 and 26 years old. However, age is not considered during the admissions procedure and thus applicants of all ages are welcome to apply.
It is the official policy of the CEMS organization that mother tongue does not have to be tested, but can be proven with a mother tongue statement. However each CEMS school is empowered to establish and implement its own application requirements, and RSM has determined that mother tongue statements are not sufficient evidence of master of the mother tongue. The mother tongue, as with all other languages indicated in an IM/CEMS application for RSM must also be evidenced on paper in a form that is acceptable to RSM. On the CEMS language requirements page you can find explanations on how to provide the correct documentation for each language.
It's possible to follow a limited selection of additional courses from RSM Bachelor programmes, for example if you are missing courses in your current bachelor curriculum for a master you are interested in.
These courses are only available for students who are currently enrolled in a Bachelor programme from a Dutch research university.
On the general website of the Erasmus University you can find the information and the registration form for elective courses from our Dutch language Bedrifskunde bachelor programme.
If your bachelor is/was taught in English, you can also follow elective courses from our International Business Administration bachelor.
If you have any questions please contact the Bachelor Programme Management via bsc.pm@rsm.nl.
You can only apply for a scholarship via OLAF in general. It is not possible to choose for a specific RSM scholarship. RSM will decide whether you get awarded a scholarship and - if so - which one.
It is not possible to choose for a specific RSM scholarship in OLAF, except for the Entrepreneurial Spirit Scholarship. RSM will decide whether you will get awarded a scholarship and - if so - which one.
If you think that your grade does not reflect you mathematical abilities and that your level of mathematics will be enough to be successful in the IBA programme, you may choose to prove this by taking a mathematics exam. It is your own responsibility to register for the exam on time.
Keep in mind that successfully passing the mathematics exam means that you fulfill the mathematics requirement but it does not guarantee a place in the programme.
